| COP HILL LAD was withdrawn on 2.1.09 by order of the Stewards (retired on 2.1.09) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter PERFECT ATHLETE. TIMBER CITY was withdrawn on 3.1.09 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (substantial amount of mucopus in trachea on scoping after exercise). Before being allowed to race again, TIMBER CITY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. MAINLAND MASTER bounded in the air at the start. DOUBLE FANTASY and SUPER FAMILY were slow to begin. On jumping, PERFECT ATHLETE blundered. At the 1000 Metres, ABLE STANDARD was momentarily steadied away from the heels of MAINLAND MASTER which shifted in when not quite clear. Apprentice K C Leung (MR FLOODLIGHT) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that commencing to make the turn at the 700 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in, causing crowding on his inside to SUPER FAMILY, NEWSWIRE TOO and ROCKALOT, resulting in those horses being unnecessarily crowded for room, losing the running to which they were rightfully entitled and being checked. BAYVIEW GREYSLEW, which was following, was checked in consequence. Apprentice Leung was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday 15 January 2009 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley racemeeting next Wednesday 7 January 2009. Near the 600 Metres, NEWSWIRE TOO was steadied away from the heels of SUPER FAMILY which shifted out. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, ABLE STANDARD was steadied away from the heels of MAINLAND MASTER which steadied away from the heels of PERFECT ATHLETE. At the 500 Metres, NEWSWIRE TOO was checked to avoid the heels of SUPER FAMILY which became unbalanced in its action and lost ground. In the Straight, SUPER FAMILY hung in. When questioned regarding the poor performance of HOT SUN, P H Lo said as HOT SUN did not show natural early speed today, he was required to make use of the horse in the early stages to obtain a forward position as instructed. He said HOT SUN was able to obtain a forward position, however, was obliged to travel three wide and without cover outside the lead throughout the race. He said in the Straight when placed under pressure HOT SUN failed to respond to his riding due to the tough run the horse had endured. HOT SUN and MR FLOODLIGHT were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of HOT SUN and MR FLOODLIGHT after the race did not show any significant findings. DOUBLE FANTASY and PERFECT ATHLETE were sent for sampling. |

| JADE CHINA was withdrawn on 2.1.09 by order of the Stewards (retired on 2.1.09). MULTI-WIN SPIRIT was slow to begin. ZERO GRAVITY, which was standing with its head turned to the left, was slow into stride and then after having taken time to muster travelled wide and without cover for the remainder of the race. Approaching the turn at the 800 Metres, SO NICE, which was proving difficult to settle, was steadied away from the heels of NOBLE ZOOM which was carried in slightly by LITTLE BIG BOY. No action was taken. For a considerable distance after the 400 Metres, SO NICE was held up and unable to improve when travelling behind LITTLE BIG BOY which commenced to give ground, then after the 100 Metres was again steadied when having difficulty obtaining clear running. In the Straight, MOONGLOW hung in. LITTLE BIG BOY and ZERO GRAVITY were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of LITTLE BIG BOY and ZERO GRAVITY after the race did not show any significant findings. GRAND GENERAL and MOONGLOW were sent for sampling. |

| GOOD STRIKE was withdrawn on 2.1.09 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore foot) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter COOL CAT. FLYING COLOURS was withdrawn on 3.1.09 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore foot). Before being allowed to race again, GOOD STRIKE and FLYING COLOURS will both be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After arriving at the Start, KEEP GOING, which had lost its left front plate during its preliminary, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was lame in the left front leg and in his opinion was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of KEEP GOING. Before being allowed to race again, KEEP GOING will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. AMAZING FLYER and ALL PROFIT were slow to begin. Near the 700 Metres, CRICKET DON was steadied and shifted in away from the heels of FLYING SPRINTER which got its head on the side and shifted out. For the major part of the race, BELONG TO CASA hung in. Throughout the race, LEGEND and NATIONAL GLORY hung in and proved difficult to ride. HOT PEPPER, KING OF SCOTS and AMAZING FLYER were sent for sampling. The Veterinary Officer reported that an endoscopic examination was conducted on BELONG TO CASA at the request of Trainer A S Cruz and said this examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, BELONG TO CASA will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. |
|
| TATTENHALL DELIGHT, Standby Declared Starter, was withdrawn on 3.1.09 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore). Before being allowed to race again, TATTENHALL DELIGHT will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After being boxed, METRO RIDER became fractious, reared, hit its head on the overhead bar and flipped over. METRO RIDER was removed from its stall and examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of METRO RIDER. Before being allowed to race again, METRO RIDER will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. When METRO RIDER flipped over, SHAXI BABY became fractious, endeavoured to turn around in its stall and became wedged. SHAXI BABY was removed from its stall and examined by the Veterinary Officer who said the horse had sustained abrasions to its forehead and in his opinion was not suitable to race. Before being allowed to race again, SHAXI BABY will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. TREASURABLE, which had been placed in the starting stall adjacent to the stall occupied by METRO RIDER, was removed from its stall and examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. From the outside barrier, TOUT VA BIEN was taken back in the early stages. FULL BLESSINGS and LEAD THE PROSPECTS were slow to begin. In the middle stages, MASSIVE STAR hung out. Near the 250 Metres, Apprentice T H So (MASTER TOWER) when pulling his whip extended his right arm away his body which came into contact with the body of Apprentice K C Leung (TREASURABLE) which was shifting out to obtain clear running. The Stewards, having in mind Apprentice So’s inexperience in that this was his third race ride in Hong Kong, decided it was appropriate he be severely reprimanded and told in future he must refrain from extending his arms away from his body which may result in contact being made with another rider. In the Straight, KEEN TAKER hung in and at the 100 Metres was steadied to avoid the heels of TOUT VA BIEN (W C Marwing) which when shifting to the outside of JADE DANCER to obtain clear running was carried wider by that horse which when giving ground shifted out slightly. In the circumstances, W C Marwing was advised to exercise care. At the 100 Metres, MASSIVE STAR was steadied away from the heels of FULL BLESSINGS. When questioned regarding his riding approaching the 700 Metres, Apprentice M Chadwick (FULL BLESSINGS) said after his mount began only fairly, he rode along to improve his position and was travelling towards the inside of COSMO SUCCESSOR. He said approaching the turn at the 700 Metres it appeared to him that COSMO SUCCESSOR was intent on shifting to the rail and he felt he would have been required to make further use of FULL BLESSINGS to maintain its position inside that runner. He said he elected to steady his mount and have it travel comfortably rather than ride along and hold its position at this time. He said he felt this was in the best interest of his mount. He said when he did this COSMO SUCCESSOR shifted to the rail in front of him. Apprentice Chadwick was told his explanation would be reported, however, where circumstances permit he should maintain his position. When questioned, Apprentice K C Leung said he had been instructed to follow SHAXI BABY in the run and it was anticipated this would have TREASURABLE travel in a midfield position with cover. He said TREASURABLE began best, he did not ride it along in the early stages and immediately endeavoured to find a position in midfield with cover. He said when a number of runners improved to his inside prior to the 1000 Metres, he allowed TREASURABLE to come back further in the hope of obtaining a position behind MASSIVE STAR, however, he was not able to do so and continued to be wide and without cover. He said because of this approaching the turn at the 700 Metres he elected to take TREASURABLE back further to obtain cover and race at the rear. He said in the Straight TREASURABLE closed the race off only fairly. Mr P O’Sullivan, trainer of TREASURABLE, confirmed the riding instructions issued and said the horse in its recent starts had not been showing good gate speed and therefore he did not believe it would be able to obtain a forward position. Both Mr O’Sullivan and Apprentice Leung conceded after reviewing the video of the race that Apprentice Leung had erred in taking TREASURABLE back to a position at the rear given the manner in which the horse began. Having in mind his inexperience, Apprentice Leung was told in future he should not set his mounts too great a task and he must maintain an open mind to riding his mounts in the manner best suited to the way the races are being run. TREASURABLE and MASSIVE STAR were sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, TREASURABLE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea. A veterinary inspection of MASSIVE STAR after the race did not show any significant findings. FULL BLESSINGS, TOUT VA BIEN and COSMO SUCCESSOR were sent for sampling. |

| GALLANT MASTER was slow to begin. VICTORY MASCOT was slow into stride. From the outside barrier, GO STITCH was taken back on jumping, PALAIS D’OR began awkwardly and bumped the outside gate of its stall. In the early and middle stages, AMAZING JOURNEY proved difficult to settle, making the turn at the 800 Metres got its head on the side, hung out and carried WADADELIGHT wider. After this, WADADELIGHT travelled wide and without cover. Near the 700 Metres, AMAZING JOURNEY, which continued to prove difficult to settle, was checked away from the heels of PALAIS D’OR. Rounding the Home Turn, DASH, which was endeavouring to shift out to obtain clear running, was steadied away from the heels of FOREVER FORTUNE. On straightening, PALAIS D’OR was checked to avoid the heels of ESPACE D’OR which was giving ground. Also on straightening, SUPER was steadied when awkwardly placed behind AMAZING JOURNEY and outside PALAIS D’OR. Shortly after straightening, GALLANT MASTER was steadied and shifted to the inside of FOREVER FORTUNE to obtain clear running. In the Straight, SUPER hung out. For the major part of the race, ON SHAN BRAVE travelled wide and without cover. The performance of ESPACE D’OR, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, ESPACE D’OR will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of BEST NOODLE, E Saint-Martin said as instructed he was able to lead and the horse travelled comfortably in the early and middle stages. He said however BEST NOODLE came under pressure rounding the Home Turn and was most disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. BEST NOODLE was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of BEST NOODLE after the race did not show any significant findings. GO STITCH was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, GO STITCH, which finished tailed out, was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said an endoscopic examination showed the horse had a persistent displacement of the soft palate. The performance of GO STITCH was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, GO STITCH will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. PALAIS D’OR and AMAZING JOURNEY were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that MIGHTY MAN had bled from both nostrils. |
|
| After arriving in the saddling stalls, INDUSTRIAL MARVEL became fractious and lost its left front plate. This plate was replaced. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. MAGIC TEMPLE and TOP TOP LIGHT were slow to begin. SPECIAL K began awkwardly, shifted out and was checked away from the heels of GLOBAL WIN. Making the turn at the 700 Metres, SPECIAL K, which was racing ungenerously, was checked away from the heels of ROCKET POWER. After this, SPECIAL K commenced to hang out in the middle stages. In the early part of the Straight, SPECIAL K shifted out and bumped MAGIC TEMPLE, causing both horses to become unbalanced. On straightening, INDUSTRIAL MARVEL blundered after bumping with SOLAR MIGHTY which also became unbalanced. Over about the final 150 Metres, ROCKET POWER, which was closing the race off strongly, was not able to obtain clear running. Because of this, ROCKET POWER was not ridden out to the end of the race as it normally would be. For the major part of the Home Straight, DYNAMIC BLITZ was held up and unable to obtain clear running. Because of this, DYNAMIC BLITZ was not properly tested. For the major part of the race, TAIJI SPIRIT travelled wide and without cover and in the Straight hung in. When questioned, K T Yeung (RICE FIELD) said he had been told he should go forward and endeavour to race outside the lead in the early stages. He said he was instructed to endeavour to give RICE FIELD a breather making the turn at the 700 Metres if possible. He agreed that he had to make considerable use of his mount in the early stages to go forward and race outside the lead, however, he said because of the manner in which the riding instructions were given to him, he did not believe it was open to him to exercise discretion. Mr J Moore, trainer of RICE FIELD, confirmed the riding instructions issued. He said RICE FIELD was having its first start on the All Weather surface and he believed on form JOLLY GOOD FORTUNE and DYNAMIC BLITZ would go forward and either one of them might lead. He said he believed RICE FIELD would be able to obtain a forward position without having excessive use made of it in the early stages. He said he did not anticipate TAIJI SPIRIT being as far forward in the early stages which resulted in RICE FIELD being left racing wide and without cover. He conceded after reviewing the film that too much use was required to be made of RICE FIELD to obtain a position outside the lead. K T Yeung and Mr Moore were told their explanations would be reported and Mr Moore was also told he should avoid issuing riding instructions which prevent riders from using their discretion where appropriate. MAGIC TEMPLE was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of MAGIC TEMPLE after the race did not show any significant findings. DYNAMIC BLITZ, SOLAR MIGHTY and TOP TOP LIGHT were sent for sampling. |

| While parading behind the barriers with its blindfold fitted, GALACTIC TACTIC became fractious, reared over, dislodged C W Wong, its rider, and broke through the running rail. GALACTIC TACTIC was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of GALACTIC TACTIC. Before being allowed to race again, GALACTIC TACTIC will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Subsequent to the race, C W Wong was examined by the Club’s doctor who said he was fit to fulfil his remaining riding engagements. After being boxed, TUSCAN SPIRIT became fractious, lunged forward and broke through the front gate of its stall, dislodging D Whyte, its rider, who managed to keep control of the horse. TUSCAN SPIRIT was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said the horse was bleeding from the right nostril and in his opinion was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of TUSCAN SPIRIT. The Veterinary Officer advised the Stewards TUSCAN SPIRIT ought not be deemed to have bled. Before being allowed to race again, TUSCAN SPIRIT will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. D Whyte was uninjured. FLYING GALLOP began awkwardly and bumped with LUCKY FRUIT. On jumping, CHARITABLE STAR and SURE GOOD bumped. For the major part of the Straight, BULLISH GOLD hung out. When being eased down after passing the winning post, BULLISH GOLD blundered after striking the heels of EXTRA SPECIAL which drifted in. When questioned regarding the poor performance of SHY BALDY, a last start winner, H W Lai said his mount travelled reasonably in a forward position in the early stages. He said because of what he believed to be a quick middle section of the race, he was required to make use of his mount to maintain its forward position and as a consequence SHY BALDY failed to finish the race off. He said on pulling up following the race he noted SHY BALDY to be blowing rather hard. Mr K W Lui, trainer of SHY BALDY, said in his opinion the poor performance of SHY BALDY was due to the rise in class of today’s race and the manner in which the race was run. SHY BALDY was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SHY BALDY after the race did not show any significant findings. In the circumstances, the performance of SHY BADLY was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, SHY BALDY will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. BLAZE KING and KINDACROSS were sent for sampling. |

| On jumping, ROYAL PEGASUS was taken across behind runners. DISGUISE and SIR ERNESTO were slow to begin. In the early and middle stages, HURRICANE DASH travelled very keenly and pulled its way into a forward position. After the 1200 Metres, SIR ERNESTO, which was proving very difficult to settle, also pulled its way into a forward position. SIR ERNESTO continued to prove difficult to settle in the middle stages. Approaching the 600 Metres, HURRICANE DASH, which continued to be difficult to settle, was steadied away from the heels of SILVER SUN. After the 600 Metres, HURRICANE DASH endeavoured to shift out from behind SILVER SUN and in doing so bumped MORE BOUNTIFUL on several occasions as MORE BOUNTIFUL held its ground. Prior to straightening, HURRICANE DASH was steadied when disappointed for running between SILVER SUN and MORE BOUNTIFUL. DISGUISE, which was following, was steadied and shifted out to avoid the heels of HURRICANE DASH. After the 400 Metres, HURRICANE DASH and BLESSING bumped and became unbalanced when endeavouring to improve into a run between SILVER SUN and DISGUISE. In this incident, DISGUISE was bumped on the hindquarters and became unbalanced. At the 300 Metres, HURRICANE DASH, which was giving ground, was steadied away from the heels of BLESSING. Apprentice K C Leung (BLESSING) explained he had been instructed to ride his mount back from a wide barrier. He said he had been informed prior to the race that BLESSING had performed well when being ridden in a similar manner at its races prior to arriving in Hong Kong. He said BLESSING travelled satisfactorily throughout the race, in the early part of the Straight experienced difficulty obtaining clear running and then closed the race off nicely. When questioned, O Doleuze (YANKEE) explained he had intended to ride his mount in what was anticipated to be a slowly run race in a forward position if it began satisfactorily. He said YANKEE began badly, he then rode his mount along for a short distance in an endeavour to go forward, however, YANKEE did not respond to his riding. He said because of this he decided to allow YANKEE a chance to travel comfortably which resulted in it racing in a rearward position. He said at no stage of the race did YANKEE travel well, making the turn at the 800 Metres he endeavoured to improve his position, however, became awkwardly placed outside BLESSING and inside the heels of GREAT GUY. He said after being bumped by BLESSING, YANKEE shifted out and was checked away from the heels of GREAT GUY. He said in the Straight when placed under pressure YANKEE kept on only one-paced and disappointed him. YANKEE was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, YANKEE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, YANKEE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. HURRICANE DASH was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of HURRICANE DASH after the race did not show any significant findings. MORE BOUNTIFUL and DISGUISE were sent for sampling. |

| After arriving at the Start, W C Marwing (LONDON EXPRESS) expressed concern over the action of the horse during the preliminary. LONDON EXPRESS was examined by the Veterinary Officer who after consulting W C Marwing said in his opinion the horse was suitable to race. SOMETHING SPECIAL was slow to begin. SPECIAL DRAGON sat back as the gates opened and was slow to begin. On jumping, MAVERICK blundered. HOLIDAY SUN was slow into stride and throughout the race travelled wide and without cover. Near the 1400 Metres, BERIO, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of SAFETY FIRST. After the 1400 Metres, FOREST FOUNTAIN was bumped by SOMETHING SPECIAL which shifted out when proving difficult to settle and was steadied away from the heels of SIR GALAHAD which itself steadied at this time. No action was taken. Near the 900 Metres, INDUSTRIAL EXPRESS became unbalanced and lost ground when crowded for room between STOLEN THUNDER and DUMBARTON ROCK which when being steadied away from the heels of BERIO shifted out slightly. No action was taken. After the 500 Metres, when endeavouring to improve into a run between BERIO and DUMBARTON ROCK where there was insufficient room, SIR GALAHAD struck the heels of BERIO and fell, dislodging Apprentice K C Leung, its rider. SOMETHING SPECIAL and FOREST FOUNTAIN, which were following, were checked severely in consequence. Apprentice Leung was severely reprimanded and told he must ensure there is sufficient room before attempting to take runs between horses. Whilst the Stewards were satisfied his riding over the concluding stages did not affect MAVERICK’s finishing position, J Victoire will be reminded of his responsibility to ride his mounts out at least hands and heels right to the end of the race where possible. Z Purton (DUMBARTON ROCK) said it had been intended to ride the horse in 4th or 5th position. He said DUMBARTON ROCK began well and travelled into a forward position. He said near the 1600 Metres he saw SPIRIT OF LO PAN being ridden forward to cross to the lead and he was concerned if he followed that runner he would be pocketed and have difficulty obtaining clear running. He said because of this he elected to steady DUMBARTON ROCK from a position inside MAVERICK, shift out and follow BERIO in the run as he felt that horse would carry him forward. He said as a consequence DUMBARTON ROCK raced slightly further back than intended. Following the race, W C Marwing reported throughout the race LONDON EXPRESS did not stride out properly and when the horse was well beaten, he did not persevere in riding it out. LONDON EXPRESS was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of LONDON EXPRESS after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of LONDON EXPRESS, a last start winner, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, LONDON EXPRESS will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SOMETHING SPECIAL was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SOMETHING SPECIAL after the race did not show any significant findings. SPECIAL DRAGON and BERIO were sent for sampling. |

Before being allowed to race again, UPSIDE OF ANGER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. On jumping, NAMJONG FIGHTERS and THE ONLY KID were taken back from wide barriers. In the early stages, HOME TREASURE proved difficult to settle and at the 1100 Metres got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of RELY ON ME. Approaching the 1000 Metres, ISTIDE lost ground when following WHIPLASH which after initially being ridden to go forward was then steadied in an attempt to be taken back to a position with cover. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, HOME TREASURE, which continued to prove difficult to settle, was steadied when crowded for room inside WINSOME REFLECTION (Apprentice M Chadwick) which shifted in momentarily. As the Stewards were satisfied Apprentice Chadwick relieved the pressure he was applying to HOME TREASURE, no action was taken, however, he was advised to exercise care. Near the 500 Metres, SPRING SUN became unbalanced, shifted in and bumped WISE LOVER. At the 500 Metres, WHIPLASH was steadied when awkwardly placed while improving inside the heels of WINSOME REFLECTION which commenced to give ground. On straightening, NAMJONG FIGHTERS and THE ONLY KID bumped. Over about the final 100 Metres, NAMJONG FIGHTERS was not able to obtain clear running and because of this was not ridden out to the end of the race. In the Straight, WISE LOVER hung out. Also in the Straight, GOOD PARTNER hung in and proved difficult to ride. Close to the line, SOARING RIVER, which was closing the race off, was crowded for room between SPRING SUN and CHATER D’CAT. Throughout the race, WINSOME REFLECTION travelled wide and without cover. D Whyte, the rider of THE ONLY KID, 5th placegetter, will be reminded of his responsibility to ensure he rides his mounts out at least hands and heels to the end of the race where circumstances permit. WHIPLASH was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of WHIPLASH after the race did not show any significant findings. HOME TREASURE and CHINA HERO were sent for sampling. |
